Homework in fourth grade is composed of short and long-term assignments. Homework is assigned on a daily basis and expected to be returned the next day, unless specifically stated otherwise. It is important that all work be done neatly. I have discussed the importance of taking pride in our work no matter if it's a small homework assignment or a major, long-term project. Here are some helpful hints to guide you with homework.
Homework Tip #1 Choose a well lit, quiet place at home to do homework. Even if most homework is completed at another location after school, there still should be a place in the home in which to study. The kitchen table or a corner of the living room is fine, as long as it is well lit and quiet during homework time. * IMPORTANT: Keep the TV off while homework is being done. Whenever possible, keep the study area off limits to brothers and sisters during work time.
Homework Tip #2 Put together a kit that contains the materials usually needed to complete homework assignments. Here is a list of supplies most often required; Crayons, pencils, writing paper, markers, dictionary, erasers, ruler, and scissors.
Homework Tip #3 Schedule a specific time each day for homework. Post the schedule on the refrigerator. Both child and parent should initial the chart each day after homework is completed.
Homework Tip #4 Once your child has completed their assignments, they should place the homework back in their backpack. You can also place it in the same location everyday so that your child will be able to remember or find it quickly so they may return it to school the next day.
Homework Tip #5 By encouraging children to work on their own, a parent helps develop important life skills such as following directions, beginning and completing a task, and time management. Do this every day:
1. Check to see if your child has a homework assignment.
2. Remind your child when homework time has been scheduled.
3. Check to see that your child has all the necessary materials.
4. Make sure they know what is expected.
5. Suggest they call a friend if they don’t remember what the assignment is.
6. Give your child help only if he or she makes a real effort to do the work first.
